Purpose of the PDF Format
HTML (the code behind Web pages) cannot maintain all the original formatting and presentation of many documents. In such cases, we use a different format: Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF documents maintain the look of the original document, and they can be viewed on any Macintosh, PC, or Unix computer. First, however, you must download and install a PDF reader program.
Installing Adobe Reader
The Adobe Reader Web siteExit contains detailed information on this product, and allows you to download free copies of Adobe Reader for Windows, Macintosh, or UNIX systems. Please note that there are other PDF viewers you can use instead.

We suggest that you configure Adobe Reader as a plug-in application for your Web browser. You won't have to wait for a separate application to launch; you can read PDFs directly in your browser. You can start reading the PDF file while it's still downloading. You can also read PDF pages side by side.
If you already have a Web browser installed on your computer when you install Adobe Reader, it should automatically install itself as a browser plug-in. You will know that it is properly installed as a helper application if you see the PDF file in the browser window, with a row of special Reader buttons along the top of the viewing screen.
Downloading Large Adobe PDF Files
Download times of large PDF files vary based on connection speed. If a document is labeled with a megabyte, it should be considered a large file and it may take a while to download to your PC. At EPA, PDF file sizes are labeled and megabytes are indicated by MB.
Printing Adobe PDF Files
When printing Adobe PDF files from within your web browser, do NOT use the web browser print facility. Instead, use the print button at the left end of the special Adobe Reader tool bar, which appears immediately above the viewing window. See illustration below for location of this print button.

Convert to PDF/X, PDF/A, or PDF/Eusing a profile
The Print Production toolset is displayed in the right hand pane.
In the Preflight dialog box, choose PDF Standards from the Libraries drop-down list.
Expand a compliance profile and select the profile you want. For example, under PDF/A Compliance, select Convert To PDF/A-1b.
Click Save to convert the file based on the selected profile.
The Print Production toolset is displayed in the right hand pane.
Select Save As PDF/X, Save As PDF/A, or Save As PDF/E, and then click Continue.
Select a conversion profile and one of the available viewing or printing condition.
- To apply corrections during the conversion, choose the Apply Corrections check box.
- Click the question mark icon to see a list of the fixups that are applied.
To save the profile, click Save As Profile.
To convert the PDF based on the selected profile and settings, click Save As.
If the conversion succeeds, a green check mark appearsin the Preflight dialog box. If the conversion fails, a red X appearsin the Preflight dialog box.
Verify a PDF against PDF/X, PDF/A,PDF/VT, or PDF/E criteria
PDF/X, PDF/A, PDF/VT, and PDF/E files can be created in various ways, such as by using Acrobat Distiller or the File > Save As
The Conformance information indicates the standard used to create the file, the ISO name, and whether the file has been verified as PDF/X-, PDF/A-, PDF/VT-, PDF/UA-, or PDF/E-compliant. The Output Intent information indicates the color settings associated with the file. To verify the standards conformance for the file, click Verify Conformance.
You can remove all PDF/X-,PDF/A-, or PDF/E-specific information, such as the output conditionor the GTS_PDFX version key. This action is useful if a file has beenmodified, if you want to start over, or if an ICC profile increasesthe file size too much.
The Print Production toolset is displayed in the right hand pane.
In the Preflight dialog box, choose PDF Standards from the Libraries drop-down list.
Expand the Document info and Metadata group and select the Remove <compliance_name> Information option. For example, select Remove PDF/A Information.
Select a location to save the file and click Save.

If the operation is successful, a green check mark appears in the Results tab of the Preflight dialog box. If the operation fails, a red X appears in the Results tab of the Preflight dialog box.
