Text notifications that appear on your iPhone come with the option of alerting you with a sound whenever you receive a text. Assigning different text tones to each contact lets you know who sent you a text without looking at your phone. If the text sounds don't work on your iPhone, you may have turned them off.

Troubleshooting

Push the 'Ring/Silent' side switch up to place it in the 'Ring' position. The iPhone silences most sounds when you set the switch to the 'Silent' position. Turn up the volume on the side of the iPhone.
